Biomechanical post-surrealism may not be an officially recognized art form but the term has been used to describe the work of Spanish artist Obes Gonzalo. Being an autodidact (ironically and jokingly he says: “It’s a pity I never had a better teacher than me.“), he creates mixed-media works that are often marked with conflict and protests from fundamental Christians. His creations feature humanoids and bionic life forms, in many cases inspired by classical works of art, including paintings by William Bouguereau.

Shown above is his work Post-Genesis, Nuntium arcanus (subtitled Bouguereau’s theosophical accident), derived from La Vierge au Lys (The Virgin of the Lilies, 1899). Another of his works is called The humanoid Bouguereau, based on Le Guêpier (The Wasp’s Nest, 1892).

Below you can compare the original paintings with Gonzalo’s versions. Click the original paintings to visit the galleries where you will find many more contemporary variations. Click the remastered versions to view them on Gonzalo’s website. Finally, click this link to download a PDF file containing many of Gonzalo’s works in large format (with Spanish text).
