Bouguereau in a socio-political statement

William Bouguereau never shied away from depicting poor and deprived mothers and children, and some of his beggar’s portraits are among the best known of his works. So it’s no coincidence that British digital artist rubyblossom (who also publishes as Nitwitbrit on DeviantArt) found inspiration in a Bouguereau painting to create the image shown above.

It uses Bouguereau’s 1882 work La Tricoteuse (The Little Knitter) and a number of stock photos to show the contrast between a little country girl and a well-dressed (and supposedly wealthy) woman. The title The Rich get Richer! says all about the idea behind rubyblossom’s creation.
