In July 2010, photoshop site Worth1000 challenged digital artists to “add bling to classic art”. In the third edition of the popular Pimp My Ren contest they were invited to “show us today’s big bling, hip culture as seen thru the eyes of yesteryear’s classic artists”.
The image shown above was the undisputed contest winner. Modern Girl was created by Scottish artist DaemonDCLXVI, who reworked Bouguereau’s 1898 Tête de jeune fille (Head of a young girl), and transformed the 19th century girl into a true representative of our age.
Below you can compare the two versions. Click the first to visit the gallery where you will find several more remastered versions of Bouguereau’s painting. Click the second to view Modern Girl on Worth1000.
The fifth highest entry in this contest was also a Remastered Bouguereau. Black Femme au coquillage, created by multichanneler, is a contemporary version of Bouguereau’s 1885 painting Femme au Coquillage (Woman with Seashell). Click each to view them in their original context.
