Shown here is a funny concoction of three different images, including Bouguereau’s 1887 work Jeune Bergère Debout (Young Shepherdess Standing). It was created by Flickr member sammydavisdog. The photo of the tree (a Quercus robur) was found on Wikipedia, and the two sheep (named Kia and Kaha) were provided by Flickr member acire111. Together they create an all-natural environment in which Bouguereau’s shepherdess clearly feels at home.

The picture’s title (Leave them alone and they’ll come home) is a reference to an old nursery rhyme:

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep
And can’t tell where to find them
Leave them alone,
And they’ll come home
Wagging their tails behind them

Below are the three elements of the picture. Click to visit the gallery where you will find many more contemporary versions of the original Bouguereau painting.
