With irregular intervals photoshop site Worth1000 organizes their Counterfeit Art contest, challenging digital artists to “take any famous painting or artwork and alter it in such a way that it is obviously a forgery.” The 13th edition, in February 2012, drew 33 entries, two of which were Remastered Bouguereaus. The one shown above was the third prize winner, created by KingDiamond. His work was inspired by Bouguereau’s 1885 painting Femme au Coquillage (Woman with Seashell).

Below you can compare the two versions. Click the first image to visit the gallery where you will find over twenty remastered versions of Bouguereau’s original painting. Click the second to view Too fake on Worth1000.

Not all Remastered Bouguereaus are digital creations. Case in point is this vase made by master engraver Tomáš Lesser from the Czech Republic. Using Bouguereau’s 1893 painting Jeunesse (Youth) for inspiration, Lesser hand-engraved the young woman and two angels on a mouth blown vase from unleaded ecological crystal glass. Only ten copies were made, and are all signed by the engraver.

Ichiruki is a word formed from the first four letters of the names of the characters of Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki from the manga Bleach. It is one of the more popular romantic pairings of this anime. Spanish illustrator/graphic design artist peca06 always wanted to make a rendition of Bouguereau’s famous painting Cupid and Psyche as Children, also known as The First Kiss, for Ichiruki. The adorable result is shown here.

American caricaturist Rodney Pike [website, Google+, Flickr, deviantArt] is represented several times over here on Bouguereau Remastered. The image above shows his photo-manipulation of actress Felicia Day. In his own words:

“I’m sure most of you know her for her acting and her work on The Guild Web Series. I like this image of Felicia with the smirk on her face so I chose it along with a Bouguereau masterpiece to do a spoof photo-manipulation. She’s too pretty for a caricature so I went with straightforward manipulations and a little humor added. I was nice to her because I want to get on her good side.”

Below you can compare Pike’s work with Bouguereau’s original.
Photoshop site Worth1000 regularly invites digital artists to join a Ghost Ren contest, and create a ghostly image in a classical work of art. In September 2011, the contest got a new twist: to include an invention that was created in the month of September of any year. The resulting Ghost Ren with a Twist contest drew 35 entries, five of which were Remastered Bouguereaus.

Shown above is the highest scoring among them, finishing #4. It was created by TheBlackMamba, and based on Bouguereau’s Jeune Fille se Defendant Contre L’amour (Young Girl Defending herself against Cupid, 1880). The invention was a “device for mothers with nursing infants particularly to avoid unpleasant and embarrassing situations in public places by the necessary exposure of the breast in suckling a child”, patented in September 2009. (See picture here.)

Below you can compare the original and the remastered versions. Click the first image to visit the gallery where you will find nearly 30 contemporary variations on Bouguereau’s work. Click the second to view No More on Worth1000.

William Bouguereau’s quintessential 1895 painting Le Ravissement de Psyche (The Rapture of Psyche) is by far the most remastered artwork on this site. Shown above is the 95th addition to the gallery, entitled We need no wings to fly. It was created by Austrian digital artist Monika Frick, who publishes as Minzile on DeviantArt.

In her own words: “Bouguereau’s painting of amor & psyche has always fascinated me. I wanted to take it as an impulse to show my own view of how love and soul work together.”

Below you can compare the two versions. Click the first to visit the gallery where you will find nearly one hundred remastered versions of Bouguereau’s painting. Click the second to view We need no wings to fly on DeviantArt.
